Speaker and Presenter

Need some inspiration for your next event?

Kate Histon is an experienced educator, podcast host, and presenter whose work explores leadership, psychological safety, and human behaviour in the dance industry. She is available for keynote presentations, conferences, industry events, and professional development workshops.

With four decades in the dance world, from child performer to international adjudicator, studio owner, mentor, and podcast host, Kate speaks to the heart of what it means to lead, teach, and grow in high-pressure creative environments.

Having grown up in a competitive dance culture and navigating a challenging relationship with a dance parent, Kate brings a rare dual perspective: one that honours the rigour of training while advocating for reform and wellbeing. She speaks candidly about overcoming perfectionism, performance anxiety, and panic disorder all while running a highly successful dance school she founded at 19 years old and led for over two decades.

Kate is also the host of ‘Dance Real Podcast’, a growing platform known for its honest, nuanced conversations about mindset, leadership, identity, and change within the dance industry. Through the podcast, Kate continues to challenge outdated norms and spotlight voices committed to more conscious and sustainable ways of teaching and performing.

Her presentations blend personal truth with practical insight, challenging audiences to redefine success, cultivate emotional resilience, and create healthier systems for dancers, educators, and leaders alike. Whether she’s speaking to parents, teachers, students, or studio owners, her message is clear: sustainable success starts with clarity, compassion, and courage.

Topics

Trauma-Informed Leadership in Competitive Dance Training Environments

High-performance dance places unique demands on young people, and the way teachers use leadership, authority and communication can significantly shape that experience.

Drawing from her presentation for the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science, Kate explores power dynamics, psychological safety, boundaries, communication and relational patterns within competitive dance training. The focus is on maintaining high standards while creating environments where dancers can develop with greater agency, trust and dignity.

Beyond the Result: Helping Dancers Navigate Comparison, Rejection and Success

Competition inevitably brings results, rankings, comparison and disappointment. Kate explores how dancers can learn to interpret these experiences without allowing a single performance, adjudication or result to define their confidence.

The focus is on developing perspective, self-awareness and a healthier relationship with achievement while remaining ambitious.

Rethinking Resilience: Beyond “Toughen Up” in Dance Training

Resilience in dance has often been associated with pushing through, suppressing emotion and tolerating discomfort. But endurance and resilience are not the same thing.

Kate explores how educators can help dancers navigate disappointment, criticism, mistakes and pressure while still maintaining high standards. The focus is on developing emotional literacy, regulation, agency and reflective learning, without teachers stepping into the role of therapist.

The Dance Parent: Supporting a High-Performing Child

Parents play an important role in shaping how young dancers experience ambition, competition, success and disappointment.

Kate explores the often-overlooked moments surrounding training and performance: expectations, conversations after class, reactions to results, comparison, feedback and the car ride home. The focus is on helping parents support serious dancers while protecting autonomy, confidence and the parent-child relationship.

Building a Dance Studio People Want to Belong To

A strong studio culture is shaped by more than what happens in the studio. Drawing on 23 years of studio ownership, Kate explores staff culture, communication, boundaries, conflict and the everyday leadership decisions that shape how people experience an organisation.

The focus is on building a successful, sustainable studio where both people and performance can thrive.
