Spotting Shadow Behavior and How to manage It

Mindset in Dance: It’s More Than Positive Thinking

When people talk about “mindset,” they often think it’s all about staying positive or visualizing success.

But in the real world of dance — whether you’re a performer, teacher, or parent — mindset is also about protecting your energy.

One of the biggest challenges in the dance industry isn’t just the physical demand — it’s navigating the shadow behaviours that creep into competitive or high-achieving environments.

In my latest episode of the Dance Real Podcast, I dive into:
“Energy Vampires, Credit Thieves & Silent Saboteurs — Navigating Dance Drama with Grace.”

What Are Shadow Behaviours?

Not all manipulation is obvious. Sometimes it hides in:

  • Compliments that come with strings attached

  • Sudden silence or social exclusion

  • Subtle digs and backhanded praise

  • Enthusiastic support that turns cold overnight

These are what I call shadow behaviours — unconscious or unacknowledged actions often driven by insecurity, control, or envy.

Common examples include:

  • Undermining others while appearing supportive

  • Imitating your ideas without giving credit

  • Love bombing, then withdrawing support

  • Silent sabotage behind the scenes

  • “Helpful” guidance that’s really about control

These behaviours aren’t always deliberate… but they’re always impactful.

Why It Matters for Dancers

Your mindset and nervous system drive your performance just as much as your body does.
When you’re exposed to covert negativity or subtle manipulation over time, it can quietly chip away at your confidence and clarity.

You might notice yourself:

  • Doubting your own instincts

  • Shrinking to “keep the peace”

  • Questioning whether you’re imagining the problem

Here’s the truth: you’re not imagining it.

Learning to Protect Your Energy

In this episode, I share practical strategies to help you:
✔ Spot covert manipulation without becoming reactive
✔ Set boundaries without guilt
✔ Stay anchored in your truth instead of someone else’s agenda
✔ Recognize nervous system red flags before burnout hits

Because mindset isn’t just about thinking positive — it’s about seeing clearly and leading yourself well, even when the environment is challenging.
